01/15/2002 Entry: "Viva la Mexico!"
Hot Damn! It ought to cost a lot more to be me! I am one lucky individual my friends I assure you.
Chantel and I had a quiet New Years Eve at the house with the kids and spent the next few days catching up on housework and packing for our trip. On Friday the 4th of January we headed down South to Galveston for the Bon Voyage party for our 2nd cruise with Larry Joe Taylor.
Now three years ago about 26 of us went to Akumal Mexico with Larry and Sherry for some sand, Sun and coconut rum for ten days, we had a blast but what happened on the Island, Stays on the Island. ;-)
Last year, there were 80 of us that went on a 7-day cruise out of Houston for a week of fun and the new tradition was born.
This year we were about 250 strong and not only was Larry Joe and his band (with John Inmon on guitar!!) there to entertain us but this trip included the incredible Davin James (along with Tammy Sue) and the ever so witty Steven Fromholz. The week was pretty darn incredible, the bands played three shows aboard the ship and there was plenty of other talent in the group that played on the decks both day and night (head to this blog to read about them)
We had a big day in Cozumel touring the normally windward side on the island that was the leeward on this day. Did you know that even in the Mexican equivalent of Wal-Mart they have to ring the beers up ONE AT A TIME when you buy oh, let’s say 5 cases at once? Took that girl forever!
We headed to the Reggae bar that William used to own, he got divorced and now Mrs. Ex-William owns it and William has a competing place across the street called Rasta's. She has kept up the same quality kitchen I have known for years and folks flipped over the Cheeseburgers, Lobster and other dishes. After a couple of hours we headed down the road to one of the prettiest beaches you have ever seen, we hung out there until the cervezas were gone and after a little sun and swimming.
Off down the road to sample the foods from another kitchen that were good and some of the hottest damn salsa I’ve ever had. We had one more place to hit and I learned there that you can trade 5 empty cases of beer bottles for a full case of beer, a good deal if you ask me ;-)
Some of us went for dinner and Carlos & Charlie’s, others were “tarred” and just went back to the boat; it was one very fine day!
One the ship we did a lot of eating, and a lot of drinking, then we ate some more while we waited for the Casino to open. I had a couple of real good sessions there up $700, $400 & $500 at different times, but alas there was those sessions that I did not fare as well so I think I left about $600.00 for the ship to hold for me till next time.
We had the pleasure of dinner seating being with good friends John and Pam, Steve Fromholz and his lovely young lady, Judy & Bill Wilson and Davin's bass player Scott Walker & wife. It was a great group to be sharing many great meals with.
