Congrats Mr. & Mrs. Priest!

Written by Randy Chambers

My very good friend and business partner with puretexan.com, Mark Priest, wed his longtime hell of a catch Lora Levine this weekend in San Angelo Texas.

The wedding took place at Mark's Miss Hatties Bordello Museum (see previous Blog post) and was a wonderful event. After weeks of 100+ temps the day brought rain and a pleasant 70ish degree day with no rain during the ceremony.

Mark and Lora dressed in vintage attire fitting to the location and looked wonderful.

I have never seen a couple so happy and so in love for so long as Mark and Lora. They have a unreal relationship that will endure the span of their lifetime, that is no doubt.

To my freinds, may you live happily ever after.

Hit the "Read More" link below to see some images I took of the wedding, I was not "The" wedding photographer, I was just taking images.

My Bordello Visit...

Written by Randy Chambers

I remember when my good bud and partner with puretexan.com Mark Priest called and told me he found a building to buy for the location of his jewelry store Legend Jewelers.

He was really excited and should have been, he went from a small shop opened with all of his savings to a successful large store in no time.
He told me the building was in the Historic District of San Angelo Texas, the building was from the turn of the century and still had the style, architecture and feel of that time period.

Oh and yeah Randy, it has a Bordello upstairs that came with it.

Say What??

"Yup, the last tenant was a hardware store an they used the upstairs for storage but it is so cool up there."

Mark dug into the background of the space above his future Jewelry store site and uncovered some interesting history.
Miss Hatties Bordello was one of the last to be closed down by the Texas Rangers, shutting it's doors in 1946. It had been a destination for Cowpokes, Cotton farmers, Ranchers, Cedar Hackers, Gamblers, Judges, Law Officers, Politicos and all kinds for a long time before it was shuttered.

A lot of the original furnishings was left in the rooms that consisted of a couple of receiving parlors, sitting parlors, gambling room and of course the girls boudoirs.

My Texas Family Legacy, The Burkett Pecan

Written by Randy Chambers

My mothers maiden name was Burkett, her Great Uncle and my Great-Great Uncle if I have it right, is responsible for bringing the Burkett pecan to being in Texas.

While my mothers family lived in the Comanche Texas area,  her fore relatives must have lived in the area of Putnam Texas.

While driving home from a friends wedding in San Angelo, I made the route to take me by the site of the original tree 44ish mile East of Abilene at FM 880 and I-20 in Putnam and take the picture seen here.

My mom and dad had taken me to see the Texas State Historical marker when I was about 10, I assume soon after it was erected in 1966.
The tree was struck by lighting in 1993 and despite efforts by the State to keep it alive was felled in 1994.

I am very proud to own a writing pen that was turned from that tree.

In the fall of 1900, two young sons of J.H. Burkett were squirrel hunting in the bottomlands along Battle Fish Creek, in Callahan County. Neither realized that a handful of pecans they gathered from a squirrel's nest that day would later be a factor in placing their name in the history of pecan culture.

Their father saw the nuts and, recognizing their excellence, urged the boys to find the parent tree. After some searching along the south bluff of the river, they found the tree. It was on land owned by W. A. Orr of Putnam. It was protected on three sides by live oak and mesquite trees, and between it and the river was a tall elm, which protected the pecan from the eroding river waters.

Let her have a good day.... R.I.P Flo Chambers

Written by Randy Chambers

I lost my mom this past October 8th, 2010.

She was sick a long time, had no quality of life and was ready to join my Dad in a better place.
She managed 87 great years in this life and even though I really did not have her the last few years I was her main custodian and caregiver.

I miss her dearly but know she is now out of pain and take comfort in that thought.

I had the chance to get to know a neighboring camper at the Larry Joe Music Festival several years ago and it seemed I always started and ended the night at Jim Bob's camp fire. There was normally some of the best songs at his campfire and the best songwriters.

I remember the first time I heard Jim Bob sing this song and the effect it had on me then.
My daughter Kelley was just a year out of the woods from her surgery for a Brain Tumor and was at the end of her Chemo treatments.

After the wonderful Hospice were called in mom went into a catatonic state.
I felt totally helpless.

To take my mind off the inevetable I came home and began working up a video using Jim Bob's song.

About 2 hours into the project and 90% done I got the call around 9:30 pm.

Mom had passed from this world.

This song will always be very important in my life, I hope you enjoy the montage.

Lydia Ann Channel Lighthouse

Written by Randy Chambers

Here's the deal, please do not take anything I say here as fact as my mind can and does tend to enhance things I've been told sometime. Also, please remember if you are on the water in Port A that the light house is not a museum, not public property, not available to be toured. It is privately owned and maintained.

With that said, one of the most enchanting places I have had the fortune of hanging out at is the Lydia Ann lighthouse.

I am fortunate enough to have a couple of friends, Rick and Regina, that are friends with Rick and Cameron who have been the lighthouse keepers for the past 15 years.

Another friend, Mark from Corpus was needing an engagement ring for a very special lady. I delivered it to Mark in Port A on a Friday and on Saturday Rick was kind enough to take us all to the lighthouse for a tour. Unbeknownst to Candice, the top of the tower would hold a special memory for her in it's beacon.

Rick the keeper met us at the dock and welcomed us to the property, he then gave us a really informative tour of the main house, the guest house and the lighthouse.

The lighthouse was built in 1883 if I remember correctly, the cut that is now 2 miles south at that time opened up at the lighthouse, that was the Lydia Ann channel. Until some 110 years later when to jetty's were built to hold the shoreline steady it was eroding south towards the border.

The light house has survived several large storms and what Rick referred to as the "H" word types of storms. There are no roads to the property, it is only accessible by boat. The houses, although rustic in nature are really decorated superb. The collections of nautical and island treasures inside are a joy to behold. The original Fresnel lens was removed from the lighthouse during times of war and buried in the wetlands surrounding the property. I can't remember which war or why it was buried but just that it was. The original lens has since been recovered and holds a place in a museum in Port A. the replacement lens is a solid thick affair about 16" tall.

July of 200 I had the opportunity to return to the lighthouse with my family and good friend Joe Pat Hennen and a storm had caused the bulb to burn out earlier in the day. I was amazed that the bulb is the same size as a household 60 watter but is a really bright 500 watt bulb.

The lighthouse sits in a wetlands area across from the lee side of San Jose Island. It is wonderful for birdwatching, dolphin watching and the quite and peacefulness is incredible.

The Lydia Ann is one of the most photographed and painted pieces of architecture in the area, you see it on postcards, paintings and photos everywhere in the area.

I feel honored and relish the special moments that I have been able to spend at the Lydia Ann. It is truly one of my top third coast memories.
